The SUFU You Do

by Vince Poscente
Author of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed

When Mathew Knowles (father/manager of Destiny's Child and Beyoncé) flew from Houston to preview Max and his band, more than just our front door opened. He offered, in unfiltered words, four qualities his family used towards their phenomenal success. Allow me to summarize with the acronym - SUFU - a way to build any business.

Singular Passion

Mathew emphasized passion as the key ingredient for success in music. As he articulated his advice it became clear, passion alone isn't enough. Singular passion is what it takes. From his 6'5" frame he expressed to wide-eyed teenagers, "Get good grades. Then you must EAT, SLEEP and BREATH music. NOTHING ELSE! Forget about girls. You'll miss parties. No soccer team counting on you being there." (I'm guessing "forget girls" bounced off a few disbelieving hormones.)

TAKE HOME: Ensure singular passion while you cover your responsibilities.

Unified Dedication

Dedication is essential, not just from young musicians, but parents as well. When Destiny's Child garnered initial interest, the girls were young teens. Paranoid record label executives were scared off in a large part due to sets of parents that came along with the act.

TAKE HOME: Unify dedication from your family and team (unless you want drama showcased in your own Reality/Gong Show).

Focused Talent

Talent alone isn't enough. Mathew targeted the business side of talent. He asked the boys questions they had no instant answers for. "Who's your market? What does the band stand for? What's your musical genre? Are you the three guys that will go the distance? What's your band name?" From these five questions, the boys met and came up with these answers.

  1. Rock and roll for the 13 to 18 age group interested in an indie style. This positions them for the college market in a few short years.
  2. The band is unique, raw and authentic.
  3. Blues/alternative/indie rock with a splash of punk.
  4. One set of parents didn't envision this path for their son. Since then a Craigslist ad was placed for a bassist interested in joining a band facing this golden opportunity.
  5. No idea. They're open to suggestions.

TAKE HOME: Answer these five questions in specific detail. Who's your market? What do you stand for? What's your unique talent? Who will go the distance with you? How do you define your brand?

Unconditional Support

Never underestimate the value of support. When asked if his ambitious child would have chosen a path other than music, Mathew responded, "If Beyoncé wanted to be a doctor, I'd have built her a hospital."

Sure you can be the rugged individual, determined to climb the mountain alone, but why not seek every advantage in your favor? Unconditional support from human capital around you is a huge advantage.

TAKE HOME: Make sure you are surrounded by people 100% willing to make the sacrifices necessary to join you in your lofty goals.

What doors will you open with the SUFU - you do?

Until next week, it's full speed ahead,
