Dealing with the Presher

by Vince Poscente

How are sales? Want to close more business? Is there something you want that seems remotely possible? Take a chapter out of a nine year old girl's sales strategy. It's simple:

Keep asking.

Isabella wants a cell phone. Her older siblings have a cell phone. It's not really a necessity at their age but helpful when they are off on bike rides or away from home. In Isabella's mind, it's not fair. She wants a cell phone and is an absolute artist with her sales techniques.

She'll crawl up on my lap and give me a hug. Minutes later and she'll maneuver the idea of giving her a cell phone. Days later she'll ask again. "Hey Daddy, can we go for ice cream and can I have a cell phone?"

Below is an email found in my inbox last Friday. Odd since the sender walked straight from the computer to me and said, "Daddy, check your email," followed by a smile and a wink.

Dear Daddy,

You know how you dis like at&t. Well you could get a new phone and i'll get yours. But you don't want to wait till im 10 at Christmas. So you could just give it to me now instead of a long time from here. Please, im going through lots of presher, seeing everybody talking on there phone, texting, and playing. It is so unfair. If I have a phone I wont get lost. Please say yes, Mom already said yes please please! And im not doing this in a winey voice.

P.S. This is a yes or no question. Email me back.

Love your sweet little daughter,
Isabella

How will Isabella survive without a cell phone?

Probably just fine. But the one thing we never want to do it pound optimism and persistence out of our kids. There are far too many adults running around who have given up believing in the unlikely. Grown-ups who have decided they are stuck.

So the next time you don't think the sale is possible. Crawl up in your prospect's lap. Give them a hug. Blink a few times with those puppy dog eyes. Then ask one more time. Give up and you'll never know. Give it your all and you might just get the answer you're looking for.

That's one way to deal with the presher.

Until next week, it's full speed ahead,
