Feelin' It

by Vince Poscente
Author of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed

What you say is important.
What you do is critical.
How you make people feel
supercedes all else with a lasting impression.

Sure you want to say and do the right thing but how someone feels will be what you are remembered for.

Recently a professional speaker, let's call him Vincent, lost a gig to a competitor, let's call him Flat Line. Losing business happens. Often it has nothing to do with the speaker, but more to do with a fit. Yet, Vincent and Flat Line basically had similar content: "Accelerate to Your Objectives."

Vincent (you'd like him - funny, clever, insightful and most of all - humble) sent promotional materials that lead with the experience (how people feel) followed by the content. Flat Line had materials that immediately demonstrated his content (things he said).

Flat Line won the business. Vince didn't. Say whaaaaaa?

If you are planning an event, how your guests and audience feel can translate into loyalty and a raised level of commitment. If you focus only on the mechanics of a good gathering or the content presented - you're playing chicken with an oncoming vehicle called "Missed Opportunity."

Let's say you're trying to sell something. Many stop after the spoken word. If you're an advanced sales person you not only mention the features, you talk about the benefits. Benefits aren't enough. Maybe you do the "puppy dog close" and have them try your product or let them see how great your service is. But no one will forget you if your product or service makes him/her feel better.

If you're a parent, saying and doing the right things are clearly important actions. But having your child feel respected, trusted and honored, albeit challenging, is essential.

To ensure you can provide an unforgettable experience, use an adaptation of a Covey habit - Begin with end feeling in mind.

How will your event, service, product or parenting ultimately make a person feel? Will they feel fulfilled or dumped on? Will he feel respected, trusted and honored or the opposite? Will she feel heard or ignored?

Need help finding out how?

Well don't call Flat Line. Call me and I can get you in touch with Vincent. We're close. Very close.

Until next week, it's full speed ahead,

Vince
