Playing Hurt

by Vince Poscente
Author of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed

We're in the playoffs. Game one of the quarter finals was last night. Everything hurts.

Men's hockey with guys in their 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's has a certain byproduct. An ever-increasing level of playing hurt.

If you're twenty something your feelings might be hurt. That ref made a bad call. He must not like me. The hurt is gone the next day.

If you're thirty something a spot here or there on your body might hurt. You took a slap shot on the arm. The pain is gone the next week.

If you're forty something your back or specific joints seem to hurt. You twisted funny or lifted your arm in a weird way. The pain is replaced by another pain point every few weeks.

If you're fifty something you just hurt and don't seem to care. It's fun just staying in the game. You forget what it felt like in your twenties.

Talking with some teammates you discover that everyone is playing a little hurt. It seems to be part of the game. As we climb out of this painful economy you realize that playing hurt is also still part of the game.

You might be working harder for less money. That hurts.
You might be trying to build up your savings again. What a pain.
You might be suffering from a heavy credit burden. Ouch.
Financial issues may be straining your marriage more than ever. Ow.

Whatever age you are, playing hurt is part of the game. Yet taking a couple of Advil can make the pain fade away. (Unless of course your feelings are hurt then don't take things personally. Refs make bad calls. Get over right now, why wait until tomorrow?)

Ibuprofen in life is things like meditation, yoga, walks in nature or even some hanky panky with your sugar. Find healthy ways to escape the pain as part of your daily routine.

So if you're feeling some pain right now here's a prescription: Take two rolls in the hay and call me in the morning.

Until next week, it's full speed ahead,
