Patienceby Vince PoscenteAuthor of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed
The other day it sure was good to have you around. I was trying to find an address and got frustrated. Just before I pulled a U'y I remembered advice from my wife. "When you think you've gone too far, drive an extra mile. Your turn is just ahead." Sure enough, a half a mile later, you helped me find the right turn. Then one day you were nowhere to be found. I was practicing my hockey skills with a goaltender. We were working on the wrap around shot. Even though it was practice time I wanted to simulate real time speed. Each time I tried this new skill, the goalie stopped it. Later I asked him what he thought I was doing wrong. "You just need patience. Hang onto the puck a half second longer and you'll see all sorts of openings on the net." Just when I wondered why you left, you showed up yet again. I was helping our nine year old with her math homework today. She asked how many inches where in three feet. Somehow you stopped me from helping by giving up the answer. I paused enough to ask. "Isabella, how many inches in a foot? And how many feet were there?" She learned a better way thanks to you. Dear Patience... you have this habit of disappearing and I wonder why. Maybe it has to do with the incessant nature of our instant gratification world.
Patience... if you could just stick around and be handy when I need you. Then duck away when you aren't needed, that would be great. The problem is, I rarely seem to know when you should be around until it is too late. Dear Patience... Thank you for your good judgment. Thank you for the times you're at my side as the voice of reason. Thank you for the other moments you're behind me as the influence of resolve. Thank you for showing up when the time is right. Oh, and if you don't show up when I need you next time... thanks a lot. Sincerely yours,
