Big Break Giftsby Vince PoscenteAuthor of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed Special Request Big Break GiftsSalim Nourallah writes, performs and produces music in his ultra-cool, Beatles inspired music studio. Recently he may have given a young musician his "big break." Or it might just be a little break. But the spirit of kindness shared is an amazing gift by any standard. If you've been following these eBriefs, Max Poscente (12) has been budding into a true guitar virtuoso. Musician and friend Cary Pierce introduced Max to Salim thinking they would be a good match for producing a few songs.
Curious comment since the first question seems to be, "What parent doesn't support his kid?" The answer might relate to music itself. Many professional musicians will tell you, they were left to their own devices when they were "up and coming." Maybe this was something Salim had seen too much of. One of Max's mentors and supporters is Marc Solomon (founder of Zound's Sounds School of Rock). His pet peeve is a parent who always puts sports ahead of music. True observation! There seems to be an abundance of sports chauvinism when stacked alongside music. Which brings us to a recent thank you note: Salim, Here's a story about Alicia Keys (by Cheryl Richardson): Alicia said she'd been singing since she was four and when she started expressing an interest in piano, it wasn't easy for her family to pay for lessons, let alone get her a piano. "A friend ended up not needing this piano and gave it to us," she explained. She went on to say that people always ask what her biggest break was and her answer is: "That piano." Most people think of a "big break" as someone or something that gives them a chance to show their gifts to the world - a chance to perform on stage or TV, for example. But most artists - painters, dancers, writers, musicians, designers, etc. - would tell you that their big break came well before they were able to share their creativity with others. It came as a result of someone's willingness to help facilitate the expression of his or her innate talents. Whether or not Max makes it big is not the point. The kindness you (Salim) have demonstrated is something Max has added to the repertoire of gifts he'll contribute to his world. Thank you Salim! May the spirit of kindness flow freely for all the world to enjoy. Until next week, it's full speed ahead,
