Shooting Star Enlightenment

by Vince Poscente
Author of The Ant and the Elephant, Invinceable Principles and The Age of Speed

The other day a gentleman came up after my talk and asked me what a person's goal in life should be. I replied, "To find enlightenment." He said, "No, it's to find Jesus." Doh... trick question. Being quite the master of subtle, I then said, "What's for lunch?"

I must say he got me thinking about why I immediately came up with enlightenment as my shooting star answer. Your shooting star answer is what you'd wish for the instant you see said meteor streaking across the sky. Or is it what you wish for when you cross a streaker who's clearly not shy?

There are some holes in this concept. What if you're hungry as you witnessed a shooting star? What would you wish for? (pizza) What if you're thirsty? (beer) Tired? (hammock) Bored? (pizza, beer and a game of Twister on a hammock)

Since enlightenment is an admirable quality, let's talk about that for a moment.

Our son Max is twelve and practices his guitar and singing for a couple hours per day. The other night we had friends over and asked him to play for us. We were captivated by his performance. We were not just spellbound by his talent but we realized Max was lost in his music. The talent necessary to remember the chords, the independent finger action, singing on key, reciting the words and transforming a series of notes into a melodic sound occupied all his attention. The world went away. There was no past. No future. Only the moment existed.

To see your child experience this kind of enlightenment - what some people rarely encounter in their adult years - could be a shooting star wish. Let's define enlightenment as that moment of pure bliss, flow, present moment focus.

So how do we get to enjoy this kind of enlightenment in our lives.

Let go. Athletes, musicians, poets, actors and speakers will tell you their best performance is when they let go. You know what you need to do. But the second you get cerebral, you will likely struggle.

Allowing the past and future to be irrelevant. There is little or no relevance of the past and future to feeling good now. Making "not now" meaningless opens up a window for an enlightened experience.

Become the observer. Instead of judging or interpreting. Just observe the thoughts in your mind as curious notions that float past as if they were leaves on a stream.

If this does not work for you then I suggest you play Twister in a hammock with friends, beer and pizza. You may not feel enlightened but you'll certainly be in the moment.

Until next week, it's full speed ahead,
