Reinvention Sooner Than Later

by Vince Poscente

Like it or not you will reinvent many times in your life. The better formula you use to reinvent, the more resilient you will be. You can accelerate reinvention or plod through it with degrees of discomfort. How to reinvent sooner than later - better than ever is the topic of today's eBrief. Let's stir up some reinvention - kid style.

The first ingredient for reinvention is the environment you are in. We parents have one job, get our kids ready to leave home. With that goal in mind, ensuring they are best equipped with the emotional intelligence necessary to make quality decisions is our daily objective. According to Judith Rich Harris' Pulitzer Prize finalist book, The Nurture Assumption, parents have relatively little direct influence on molding kid's character. Children's genetic code, peers and the environment they are exposed to strongly define their disposition.

A year ago, Max (11) wanted to be the world's greatest soccer player. Now he wants to have the world's greatest rock and roll band. Alex (10) reinvention path involves the spotlight - specifically acting. Isabella (8) our little comedian has a passion for dancing. Recently she said, "Daddy look, I'm shaking my money maker." Cue nervous laughter.

The second ingredient involves your peeps. Who do you hang withÉ Who has your interests in mindÉ Who holds you accountableÉ Who challenges youÉ Who can you run beside in a parallel path of reinventionÉ Kids have this step well in hand. They go to school and then have their parents in the evenings and weekends. Extracurricular activities round out the reinvention process. Our kids like many others love to try new things. There's nothing they won't try. Cue more nervous laughter.

The third ingredient is assistance. The celebrated rugged individualist or the human island-of-stone sounds admirable but reinvention doesn't have to be horribly difficult. Think of executive coaching or peer-to-peer groups. I'm part of a monthly peer-to-peer network in an Entrepreneurs Organization forum. We meet monthly to exchange ideas and an outside perspective. I have coaches that I work with regularly and just spend two days with one of my mentors, Peter Thomas. List the ways that you access a consistent and formalized outside perspective.

The fourth ingredient involves seeking and exploring. Kids do this naturally. For adults this inborn trait is lost along a trail of habits and patterns. Moreover we get caught up in work and our responsibilities to the degree we suddenly realize we aren't looking beyond our little box. According to the June 2009 Harvard Business Review, "The current economic crisis may turn out to be one of the great catalysts for action in the twenty-first century." And, "Nothing beats a giant helping of bad news to spur a person, or an organization, into action."

Whether your exploration is inspired intrinsically or extrinsically choose to follow a path of reinvention that we all did naturally as children.

Until next week it's full speed ahead,
