Closing the Gap

by Vince Poscente

When fear is high and confidence is low the gap between the two results in blaechhhk. (In case you're wondering, blaechhhk is the onomatopoeic word for ahckhhhg.)

The gap makes people freeze, turn tail or give up. The gap is like a cold sore on the upper lip of a blind date. Nothing says, get me out-of-here like - the gap.

We (that the proverbial you and I) can close the gap when we (you/I) take action to do two things. Diminish fear and gather confidence.

In a society where the media feeds our morbid addiction to fear (i.e. news about job cuts, foreclosures, terrorist attacks or the dreaded H1N1 virus - otherwise known as "the flu") it's not surprising we aren't a quivering pile of id by the end of every day. It's estimated, by the National Institute for Mental Health, one out of every ten Americans has a phobia of some kind. Robert Leahy, director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy, postulates we live in the "age of anxiety" to the degree that a typical child today has the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the 1950's.

The point is - close the gap between fear and confidence and we can get back to a sense of normalcy. The questions is - how?

Meet phobias head on. Here are the top ten phobias based on a 2001 Gallup Poll and action I recommend.

  1. 51% respondents have a fear of snakes - Hold that snake.

  2. 40% fear speaking in public - Stick with this phobia. I sincerely appreciate the job security.

  3. 36% fear heights - Cover your eyes unless you're walking, then cover your mouth lest you disturb those around you.

  4. 34% fear being closed in a small space - That really depends on with whom.

  5. 27% fear spiders and insects - Check for fangs. If none, you're golden.

  6. 21% fear needles and getting shots - Cry like a sissy. Et voila. No shots.

  7. 20% fear of mice - Seriously? Don't tell your IT guy. He'll think you're the nerd.

  8. 18% fear flying on a plane - Go hang gliding. You'll appreciate planes and Depends.

  9. 11% fear crowds - Wear clothes next time.

  10. 9% going to the doctor - Dr. Suess? Lighten up. Dr. Kevorkian? Run.

The responsibility for closing the gap rests in what you and I do in the days and weeks to come. Follow these two recommendations and we will prevail.

One - have the courage to face everything that scares you on a daily basis. Now treat each issue as an opportunity and move towards it. Laurie Skerslet, 1st Canadian to summit Mt. Everest, said it best. The closer you get to fear the smaller it becomes.

Two - confidence comes from experience. There is no better way to get experience than to take action. The specific action you take matters very little. Act and you will gain experience, hence confidence, as you go.

Close the gap! It's that fast and that simple.

Until next week it's full speed ahead,
