Go Back Different

by Vince Poscente

"Leaders, go back to work - different. Your people will expect it. It's a perfect time to approach things with a better approach." Sam Martin, one of my clients' executives, gave this sage advice to his leaders.

All too often we may have the tendency to attend a meeting, event or trip and we remain, fundamentally the same. If you are in a leadership position and you have disappeared for a conference, your staff will wonder what you are up to. Time away is a chance to improve the way you work and live.

Recently, my wife and I went to Havana, Cuba. It was our third trip under a Humanitarian Aid license. It's typical to go to Cuba with a 100 questions and leave with 200 questions. We're up to 600 questions so far. It's a country of paradoxes. There's immense pride yet abject poverty. It's rife with potential while mired in disincentives. It is an educated society with limited access to information. Cubans are strong people surrounded by crumbling buildings. There are '56 Buick taxis cruising beside '09 Mercedes ambassador vehicles.

Coming home, Michelle and I could easily fall back into our comfortable lifestyle but gratitude for abundance, freedom and self-determination was not lost on us. We have the opportunity to think and act a little different. I know we will.

It is human nature to change. The cliché, "People never change," is false. People do change. How much you embrace change is directly proportionate to your motivation to do so. In a world that is forcing us to look inward, you and I have a responsibility to embrace it. This financial crisis is an opportunity, not a burden.

Traveling to a conference or stumbling through a pummeled economy gives us the chance to seek higher ground. Therefore, let's look at how we can capitalize on our voyage.

Try this:

List ten ways that you can benefit from the recession.
Over the next ten days explore each idea.
Lock in on the ideas that have the most promise.

Time well spent is time dedicated to being a little different - a little upgrade. Believe in a better world. Help others believe the same thing and we can travel through life enriched and improved. You owe it to the people you serve. You owe it to the people you lead. You owe it to the people you love. And you owe it to yourself.

Until next week it's full speed ahead,
