Bounce Like a Kid

What a difference a year can make.

Did you read How To Have a 100% Closing Ratio where my oldest daughter beat her sales goal for the American Heart Association. Last month we went out again, this time with her little 8 year-old sister. It was a very different experience.

A few things stood out.

  • In our three-dozen home survey people seemed more stressed than the other neighborhood we door-knocked in 2007.

  • Everyone over 65ish declined to make a donation.

  • One woman (in her 40's) interrupted Isabella mid sentence and said, "I don't want any!" and slammed the door in her face.

What was more amazing was my youngest daughter's reaction. She came back smiling after her (semi) pitch to raise money and said, "Daddy, she didn't even let me finish." Then skipped merrily to the next house.

Lose half your retirement savings overnight and stress is understandable.

But sustained stress is not a solution to anything.

Bounce like a kid is the answer. My little 8 year-old didn't dwell on it at all. (Me? I felt like giving that rude woman a lecture on civility, especially around children, but I took my daughter's lead.)

This holiday season you may be feeling extra stress. Bounce out of stress by doing the following:

  1. Immediately let it go and focus on the next door. Behind the next door is better opportunity. Better yet. MAKE your opportunity.

  2. Instantly recall the value you offer. What difference are you making in the lives of others? Actively keep that front of mind.

  3. Quickly find the kid in you and others. If someone else is having a bad day, it's really not your problem. There are other kids in the sandbox what want to have fun.
