Speed Zones

by Vince Poscente

The speed zone is where connection meets opportunity. If you find yourself in a speed zone, a place where opportunity is rushing through your life, the time to spark a connection is upon you.

An example of how to thrive in a speed zone is Susie Sandstrom, CEO of Sziols America. Here's some background. In 1982 Susie met the president of the New York Road Runners club. They connected and Susie seized the opportunity. Six months and nine marathons later she showed some world class potential.

Training for the 1984 Olympic marathon a bone chip lodged in her knee triggered an onslaught of problems. Infection and three weeks in the hospital dashed her running dreams but opened the door for a new connection and opportunity. She fell in love and started a family.

Fast-forward to grown kids, a marriage in meltdown and a spontaneous invitation to participate in an eight-day bike trek in Germany. Another speed zone appeared with a new and irresistible product. Sziols sports sunglasses.

Susie immediately saw the potential of the advanced technology. She soon became the sole North American distributor. Lest you think she is lucky, put this into context. Susie is a sparkplug. Her energy is infectious and she's smart. She makes friends everywhere she goes.

Connection met opportunity in the speed zone.

Taking on the big guns like Oakley doesn't phase her. Within seconds of seeing the glasses and plugging into Susie's energy I too was hooked. I walked away energized and enthusiastic about Sziols. I went online and got my own set of these cutting edge glasses.

How did this happen so fast?

Put Susie in a room and you'll know what I mean. Anyone that casts a Susie-like speed zone aura and you realize the power is infectious.

Here's another case in point. Last weekend I went to a local establishment on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Club Dada was hosting a bunch of Zounds Sounds School of Rock bands. Rockers aged 8 to 12 had formed bands and were rockin' out on stage. It was amazing to see. The most revealing thing was how important getting into the speed zone was for each kid taking the spot light.

Kids who had talent but lacked the electricity to perform were cute but struggled to connect with the audience. Parents and friends would clap but there was something missing.

In the spring of 2008, my son Max (11) started his own band Silver Dynasty. Club Dada was his third gig. Having seen video of the first two backyard gigs he realized the importance of drawing others into the electrifying speed zone. Light up the stage and you light up the audience. Stand there, play the notes and hope they "get it" is folly.

Max and his buddies rocked the house. It was a pure and vivid example of the power of getting yourself and others energized.

Connect and seize opportunity in your speed zone.

Until next week it’s full speed ahead,
